Brigade History
Stanwell Park Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1958, with no fire truck or station, by a group of volunteers to protect the village from bush fires.

The first fire fighting equipment provided were hand tools, fire beaters and a couple of knapsack pumps. A little later on a trailer was provided and was towed to the fires by a members car. It was not until after the 1968 fires in the Illawarra region, that the brigade really started to try hard to get their own fire truck. This came around mid 1969, a WWII ex-army Chevy Blitz with 400 gallons of water, a 5hp Briggs pump and two 3/4" rubber hose reels.

The brigade received its first new tanker in 1972, a 2WD Leyland. It held 500 gallons of water and was fitted with an 8hp Briggs pump and two 3/4" hose reels. Unfortunately being petrol powered, this truck suffered from vapour locks in hot weather. The crew accommodation was "open air" which was really fun in winter.

We kept that tanker for 12 years until 1984 when the body was transferred onto a 1963 International cab chassis purchased from the Army. Although 9 years older than the Leyland its off road ability was phenomenal. It was also fitted with a 20,000 lb PTO winch which got an awful lot of other tankers out of trouble during its 9 year life with us.

In 1993 the International was replaced and was snapped up by a brigade near Young in the Riverina area of SW New South Wales where it is still in use today. In July of 2002, our current 4WD Isuzu tanker was delivered.
